Fluted Columns have adorned palaces, monuments and temples since the dawn of time, they haven’t changed very much in thousands of years. Our Fluted Column will stand out amongst the smooth round columns that are installed on many new homes in the GTA. Fluted Fiberglass Columns are available in the same range of sizes as the smooth fibreglass columns.
When determining the size requirements for your porch, it is best to have whole footage sizes such as 8 , 9 , 10, 11, or 12 feet as opposed to in-between sizes. Although the Fluted Columns can be cut down, aesthetically speaking, you should not cut through the fluting (Horizontally) with a cut or with the base whenever possible, our goal is to ensure that it looks perfect when installed. The other reason for avoiding the flutes is that the flutes would have to be filled with caulking in order to seal the column. Filling the deep flutes with caulking is not recommended, we always try to install as tightly as possible whenever possible, too much caulking is never a good thing.
Smooth Fiberglass Columns can be cut in half and wrapped around existing metal supports with a little work however Fluted Columns do not allow for this due to the spacing of the flutes. These columns also have a higher load bearing capacity due to the difference in thickness from a smooth column. The Cap and Base options are also the same as the smooth columns.
It is recommended that you not use Fluted Columns when you intend to have porch railings directly installed to them. The fluting does not allow enough material for a screw to grab onto and as such, the railing will be weak and will not meet code. If you intend on having railings installed, please ensure that newel posts are installed on either side of the column.
