In years gone by, round tapered columns were difficult and expensive to manufacturer using traditional methods. With the introduction of modern manufacturing techniques, that has changed. These changes allow for round columns to be created in various heights and diameters to fit any space in your home. Wood Columns are available in both smooth and fluted designs which allow you to choose between a more casual or formal looking column.
Our paint grade columns are made of Finger Jointed Pine which is made up of smaller pieces of pine which are adhered using a specially formulated epoxy which makes them extremely strong. One feature you will like is the smoothness of the finish. Our wood columns are manufactured using extremely sharp knives and are sanded thoroughly before they leave the shop.
Wood columns are structural and have a load bearing capacity of roughy 5,000 lbs. If you are looking to use a round column around an existing structural support (Steel or Wood), the column can be cut vertically however it will loose its load bearing capacity. All of our columns will readily accept paint, they require a coat of primer prior to painting. You may need to go over it a couple of times with the primer as the wood will soak up the primer on the first coat.
Although wood columns are meant to be installed indoors, they can be used on your porch outside. We recommend using fibreglass columns outdoors whenever possible due to the wood columns inevitably rotting after a few years outdoors. Please refer to our Round Fiberglass Column page.
